To Mayor Vincent Gray: Please don't back down to WalMart's threats. Set an example for the entire country by signing legislation requiring big retailers to pay employees $12.50 an hour.
Let them go! They offered $13.00 an hour; it was incredibly smart of the city council to pass this law before all the stores were in and things were too far along to be practically reversed. Another firm will take over the plans and give better-paying jobs to the residents; it will be better for the city.
Mayors and others are elected to lead, to make the decision that has the best possible long-term outcome, maybe take a bit of discomfort in the short term, but you will have supporters! Be the independent statesman, not the paid-for politician; support your sensible council, who are simply asking WalMart to ALMOST live up to their word—your community will thank you.
